The DTFlex Standard

How We Print: The DTFlex Standard

At Cucumber Dog, we refuse to pair museum-grade British sarcasm with cheap, cracking screen prints or faded bargain-bin ink. When Sir Cucumber Dog puts his name and cucumber monocle on a heavyweight hoodie or graphic t-shirt, the typography has to be as sharp as the insult written in it.

To achieve crisp, hyper-detailed graphics across both our 100% cotton tees and our heavyweight 8.5 oz fleece hoodies, our North American fulfilment facilities utilise DTFlex (Direct-to-Film) printing technology.

What Is DTFlex Printing?

Unlike traditional Direct-to-Garment (DTG) printing, which sprays liquid ink directly into rough fabric fibres where it can soak in and look faded, DTFlex is a precision thermal-bonding process:

  1. High-Definition Film Printing: Your design is first printed onto a specialist release film using vibrant, eco-friendly, water-based pigment inks.

  2. Micro-Adhesive Curing: A flexible, breathable powdered thermal bond is applied and cured directly behind the ink layer.

  3. Industrial Heat-Press Bonding: The graphic is heat-pressed into the garment under exact pressure and temperature, permanently bonding the artwork to the cotton face without losing a single millimetre of detail.

Why We Use DTFlex for Cucumber Dog Apparel

  • Razor-Sharp Micro-Text: Many of our Deadpan Industries, Varsity Collection, and Hostile Athletics designs feature fine crests, vintage emblems, and tiny satirical sub-text. DTFlex keeps even the smallest lettering pin-sharp and legible from across the room.

  • 100% Opacity on Heavyweight Fleece: Traditional inks often sink into thick hoodies, leaving white or cream graphics looking grey and patchy. DTFlex sits cleanly on the cotton surface of our Forest Green, Navy, Carbon Grey, and Bone hoodies, delivering solid, bold colour contrast.

  • Stretch & Bounce Without the "Plastic Shield": Old-fashioned vinyl transfers feel like wearing a laminated dinner mat on your chest. Modern DTFlex is ultra-thin, lightweight, and engineered to stretch naturally with the garment weave without cracking, peeling, or flaking.

  • Zero Weird Chemical Odours: Because DTFlex does not require spraying garments with liquid pre-treatment acid, your hoodie arrives smelling like fresh cotton rather than a British chip shop.

  • CPSIA-Compliant & Non-Toxic: All DTFlex inks and adhesives used across our adult apparel and The Litter kids' collection are water-based, vegan, CPSIA-compliant, and completely free from heavy metals and formaldehyde.

How Not to Ruin Your Garment (DTFlex Care Rules)

DTFlex prints are engineered to outlast your longest grudges, provided you do not boil them alive in your laundry room. High heat is the mortal enemy of thermal-bonded graphics. Follow these rules:

  1. Turn It Inside-Out: Always flip your t-shirt or hoodie inside-out before throwing it in the washing machine. This prevents the print from rubbing against zip teeth, jeans buttons, and the metal drum.

  2. Wash Cold (Max 30°C / 85°F): Use a cold, gentle wash cycle with mild detergent and similar colours.

  3. Avoid the Tumble Dryer (Or Use Low Heat Only): Hang-drying is the gold standard for heavyweight fleece and DTFlex longevity. High-temperature dryer settings will shrink your cotton and soften the thermal adhesive over time.

  4. Never Iron Directly on the Print: If you must iron your garment, turn it inside-out and use a cool setting. Never touch a hot iron directly to a DTFlex graphic, or you will melt the print onto your iron and have nobody to blame but yourself.

  5. No Bleach or Fabric Softeners: Fabric conditioners coat cotton fibres and weaken print adhesion over repeated washes.
