The Deadpan Index: Why We Use DTFlex on Your Heavyweight Fleece

Welcome to the technical side of Cucumber Dog. If you are dropping good money on premium heavyweight streetwear, you deserve to know exactly how we put our blatantly disrespectful jokes onto the fabric.

Today, we are breaking down the difference between DTG and DTFlex printing. Spoiler alert, we chose the one that actually survives the washing machine.

The Old Guard (DTG Printing) DTG stands for Direct to Garment. It works exactly like the inkjet printer sitting in your office, except it sprays water based ink directly into the fabric of a t shirt.

The Good: It is incredibly soft because the ink literally becomes part of the cotton.
The Bad: It only truly works on 100 percent thin cotton. If you try to DTG print onto a premium heavyweight poly blend fleece, the fabric absorbs the ink like a sponge. It leaves your graphic looking like a washed out mistake. It fades quickly, which some brands call "vintage charm", but Sir Cucumber Dog simply calls "cheap".

The Upgrade (DTFlex Printing) DTFlex is the next generation of Direct to Film technology. Instead of spraying ink directly onto the hoodie, the design is printed onto a specialised film. The ink is then coated in an adhesive powder and heat pressed onto the garment at a terrifyingly high temperature.

This is the exact technology we use for our North American city varsity line, and here is why it matters:

Fabric Versatility: DTFlex bonds flawlessly with heavyweight fleece, polyester, and thick blends. It simply does not care what the garment is made of.
Razor Sharp Sarcasm: Because the ink sits cleanly on top of the fabric rather than soaking into it, the typography of our deadpan city subtexts stays incredibly crisp. If you are going to wear a Dangerously Cheeky insult on your chest, it needs to be legible.
Aggressive Colour Vibrancy: The colours actually pop. Our Collegiate Orange looks like actual orange, not a depressing shade of brown.

The Durability Reality Check DTG fades gently over time until your hoodie looks like a dusty rag. DTFlex does the exact opposite. It holds its colour aggressively.

The only way you are going to ruin a DTFlex print is if you completely ignore the garment care tag and wash your heavy fleece in boiling hot water, which will eventually cause the print to crack. Wash it cold, dry it on a low heat setting, and the print will probably outlast your current relationship.

We did not pivot to exclusive North American fulfillment just to sell you a hoodie that falls apart after three weeks. DTFlex is the only printing method that meets the rigorous standards of our Chief Judgement Officer.
